NEW VERSION 7 Elluminate Live! Already using eLive? Visit this link to download the updated JAVA Web Start program to run the new version 7 of Elluminate Live: 24/7 eLive Configuration Room.
Elluminate Live Is a "same-time" conferencing service that allows students, over the Internet, to hear, speak, text chat, write on a white board, share Web sites, pictures, diagrams, equations, work on and solve problems together, and has many more features to help make your class sessions more interactive and interesting. Only some classes use this technology and your syllabus should say if you are using Elluminate Live.Returning Students - You can access your Elluminate Live classroom through your Blackboard course site at:
http://classes.uaf.edu
On-Campus Students - Check with the local campus staff for a computer you can use to access eLive classes.
Off-Campus Students - What you will need is:
- To have registered for the class.
- A stable and reliable connection to the Internet (broadband preferred but not required)
- A computer with a sound card. A headset with a microphone.
- To “qualify” your computer as ready for the first class session (see below).
To set up a new computer for eLive :
- HEADSET Obtain a mic and headset with your books, online, or through the campus offering the class.
- COMPUTER ADMIN To prepare your System for eLive internet conferencing, you will need access to the “administrator” level of the computer. If you are using your home computer, this shouldn’t be a problem. If you are in a school, office, or lab- you may need to work with the local computer IT administrator to download the correct software. Contact your local campus or susan.warner@uaf.edu if you need help with this step.
- JAVA Make sure you have Java downloaded onto your computer:
You can check at: Start button/Control Panel, switch to "Classic View", see the Java icon coffee cup. If you don't see the Java icon, download Java from here, then re-start your computer and come back to this page.
- WEB START The next step is to download the Java Web Start program that runs eLive sessions. You can visit the Anchorage eLive configuration room by clicking here and UAA has pretty good step-by-step instructions for this, see part 4. Be sure to choose run, open, start, or agree as prompted. Set your connection speed to 56 K for broadband or 28.8 for dial up connections.
- TEST AUDIO Once in UAA's eLive configuration room, select Tools/Audio/Audio Setup to test your mic and headset.
- Congratulations, you have now "qualified" your computer as ready for your first eLive class.
- BLACKBOARD To get to your first eLive class session, go to your Blackboard course site and click on the link to get into Elluminate Live. You can use your regular name to login and will not need a password..
- If you are having difficulty getting into Blackboard for the first time, please see these instructions for setting up your UAF ID, email, and Blackboard accounts. If you are still having difficulty, you can contact the UAF Helpdesk at 800.478.4667.
- If all else fails, please see the emergency instructions at the end of this web page or contact susan.warner@uaf.edu for additional help.

A NOTE about eLive/Java software versions:
- If you used the elluminate.com/support site in any of the steps above, you may be connecting to their server using eLive version 7. The University is using eLive version 6.5 and will likely move to version 7 in the Fall 2007 semester. We also have been using Java version 1.4.2 while eluminate.com is recommending moving to the current version of Java 1.5.
- If you did download Java 1.5, you may run into some problems with the audio in using Elluminate version 6.5 If you suspect you are having Java-caused audio problems, here is a description of the symptoms and a solution a to the problem.
